You can carry many things inside a roof cargo box but would you put a tent inside it? The roof cargo box safeguards your belonging from many weather elements and ensures they can be transported safely to distant locations. Carrying a tent makes it easier for you to camp in the countryside or remote forest. So, you may wonder if it can be fitted inside the roof cargo box?

Benefits of using a Roof Box

Before buying a roof cargo box, think of the capacity. It will vary from one user to another. If you plan to carry a lot of accessories using a large cargo box will be ideal. Roof boxes can be used to store camping gear too. Just ensure you do not cram in too many things in the rooftop cargo box and the belongings will be in good shape.

Here are some of the main benefits of owning a roof box –

    • They help you keep your gears safe and secure.
    • Most roof boxes comes fitted with a locking mechanism that helps you keep your belongings safe from thieves.
    • Easy to install and take off (when not in use). You don’t have to invest in any fancy gears.
    • Roof pods have got plenty of space to accommodate all your belongings in one go.
    • As these roof cargo boxes are waterproof, you don’t have to worry about the belongings when it’s raining or snowing outside.

Will My Tent Fit In the Roof Box?

While the roof cargo boxes come in varying sizes, most tents will fit inside the boxes. If the cargo box is large enough you will be able to pack in a tent along with other camping gear without hassles. In case you feel the tent may get damaged by putting it in the cargo box (just don’t squeeze it too hard), pack in some soft clothing and a sleeping bag with it. After buying the roof cargo box, you may get amazed by seeing how much you can pack in it.

Contrary to what most people believe, tents when folded properly don’t eat up that much space. First, you need to learn how to pack a tent inside a roof pod properly and if you manage to do that, you will have ample space to carry other gear as well.

    How to Load the Car

After buying the roof cargo box, loading it in the right way is necessary. Do not overload the box by any means. If there is anything heavy, put it inside the car trunk rather than inside the roof cargo box. Try to put lighter things in the rooftop cargo container.

How to Load the Roof Box

After putting the heavyweight things inside the trunk of the vehicle, load the cargo box. While packing in things, think of the weight limit of the cargo box. You may pack in tents and clothing but ensure these are secured well inside. Use straps so that the things do not slide inside when you drive.

Try to put the tent right in the middle and then get it surrounded by soft materials like clothing. You may also roll up the sleeping bag and put it on top of the tent. Also, while closing the lid of the roof box, don’t put too much pressure because that can damage the tent. Rather than forcing things inside, you need to take out items that can be safely stored inside the car.

Avoid over-loading because that would eventually damage the roof box. Stay below the recommended weight limit and you will be just fine.

    Is the tent heavy?

No, a tent is not heavyweight for the cargo box. Just that you have to secure it with straps. That way it will not slide from one side to another or get crushed by other camping gears inside the cargo box.

    Final thoughts

On finer analysis, using a roof cargo box to carry a tent will keep the latter in good shape. However, you have to pack it in properly and evade overloading the box. This can be handy if you like vacationing in the wilderness and carry your tent quite often.
