Can You Put Two Roof Boxes On A Car?

Well, there is no straightforward answer to that. It depends on a lot of factors like – do you have space on the roof of your car to accommodate two roof boxes? If not, then there is point in cramming two roof pods on a small space because they might end up bumping into each other and getting damaged.

Both the roof boxes have to be secured firmly to both the crossbars so that they cannot slide around or come loose while driving. Since you can’t expect the road to be always smooth, there might be some bumps and jerks while driving. So, the chances of these two roof boxes rubbing and bumping into one another is extremely high.

Another thing that you need to consider carefully is noise. Roof Boxes are known to be noisy, and when you have two of them on top of your car, the noise is going to be amplified. This might become a problem unless you find a solution like Wind Deflector. So, you might have to invest in a good quality wind deflector to keep the noise down.

Also make sure that the roof boxes that you are planning to put on the roof rack can be fitted side by side otherwise, it will be a pain in the neck to try and make them fit. Say for example, if the roof racks are 52 inches wide, you can purchase two 21 inches wide roof boxes and they can be placed side by side without any such issues.

Lastly, don’t overload the roof boxes. It is tempting to pack the roof boxes to the seams but believe me, this is a bad idea. Under no circumstances, the weight of the two roof boxes should exceed the recommended weight limit of the roof racks otherwise, you will be in big trouble.

Now that we have answered the question, “Can you put two roof boxes on a car?”, let’s take a look at the pros and cons of doing so.

    Pros

    • If you have lot of luggage to carry around, having two roof boxes can prove to be very helpful as it will free up a lot of space in the car.
    • Those of you who are planning to carry to two different types of items having two roof boxes is a good idea as you can segregate the items and put them in different roof boxes. Say for example, you can put your lacrosse gears in one roof box and fishing gears in another one. This will make it easier for you to find the things that you need without having to rummage through everything.

    Cons

    • One of the biggest disadvantages of having two roof boxes is that it can be quite noisy. It will generate flapping sound when you will be driving around at high speeds.
    • Roof boxes are definitely not designed to be aerodynamic and that means, when you two roof boxes on the roof of your car, the fuel efficiency of your vehicle will take a serious heat.
