How Much Weight Can a Roof Box Hold?

Using a car roof cargo box can be useful, especially if you like to go for trips with camping or angling equipment in your car. However, you have to buy the right-sized cargo carrier for your car. A query that intrigues many such car owners is the weight limit of such cargo boxes. How much stuff can you cram inside such a rooftop carrier, after all? You have to analyze a few important factors before you can find the right answer.

Typically, the majority of car roof cargo boxes can carry a weight between 75 to 250 pounds.

    • At first, think of car type and size. If the car is not a large one, fitting a heavy or big cargo carrier on the roof does not make sense.
    • Next, you have to think of the weight of the cargo box itself. You will find most cargo boxes may weigh between 5 to 35 pounds when they are empty. The weight varies on size and material the carrier is made of. Soft shell boxes will surely weigh less than the hard-shell ones.
    • You will find most car roof box manufacturers specify a weight limit for the products. It can be above 150 pounds if the box is pretty big and spacious inside. Remember that large-sized boxes will be quite tall and add to the car height.

It would be prudent that you abide by the carrying capacity of any car roof cargo box. In fact, you should evade packing it to the maximum limit.
