A bouncing roof box is probably the 2nd most vile thing that you will in all likelihood will come across in your life. It can drive you nuts if not taken care of. Of course, it is annoying as hell and if not stopped, will definitely damage your car. It can cause the box to come loose and fly off the roof. However, there are a few things that you can do to help prevent this from happening.
Secured Platform
First you need to provide the roof cargo box a reliable platform to sit on. Contrary to what most people believe, this can be achieved rather easily. All you have to do is to spread out the crossbar kit as far as possible. This will help the cargo box to stabilize itself.
Weight Distribution
While packing things in the roof box, you need to make sure that you are not adding too much weight at the front because that would make the box tilt forward and increase the chance of it bouncing. Put the maximum weight in the middle of the cargo box. Fifty percentage of the total weight should be equally distributed between the rear and the front. Whereas the rest 50% should be placed in the middle of the roof box. Of course, you can always make adjustment as per the need.
Bolts
You also need to double check the bolts that are attached to the box. Make sure that those bolts are not loose. You might want to use a wrench to slightly tighten those bolts. But, make sure you do not overdo it or else, either the crossbar or the bottom of the roof box will get damaged.
You need to make sure that all the knobs have got the same number of turns. This will help you to make sure that the roof box is not too loose or too tight.
Compatibility
You simply can’t attach a roof box to any car. It needs to be compatible with the make and model of your car. First you need to take a proper measurement of the roof of your car and then you need to go out in the market to find a compatible roof box. The easiest way to do that is by locating the center mounting holes inside the box to the end of the box.
Make Changes in the Placement
Another way to reduce rattling of the roof box is by placing the box further back. However, by doing so, it might interfere with the rear hatch. You will have to be really careful while opening the rear hatch otherwise, it might end up damaging the box. By changing the position of the roof box, you will be able to cut down on the wind resistance. This will also help to increase fuel efficiency.
